British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
