India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Smog Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital registered an air quality index over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable standards.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as winter begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current local leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was once considered as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Contributors

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air descends.

Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is projected to be causing approximately 10k untimely fatalities annually in the city.
