France will start stopping small boats in English Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the initiative and saying there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
