There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title belongs to a mechanised sawmill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated cutter, which converted logs into boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic dominance across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part transformed the circular movement into vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step per cycle.
“Every component was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate these parts so they acted within a perfectly controlled order, cutting on every descending stroke while advancing on every return stroke. This constituted a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
